Leucanthemum | loo-CANN-tha-mum | Shasta Daisy
Leucanthemum, or Shasta daisy, as it is commonly known, had been cultivated by the Chinese since before the birth of Christ. Of course, others have gotten into the act as well and the resulting list of hybrids is enormous. It is safe to say that a daisy exists in every size that a gardener could want. We have new varieties that bring a soft candlelight yellow to the midsummer garden.
In northern gardens, we can grow many of the leucanthemum successfully, although some may be short-lived. Winter wet can be lethal to all of them, so site carefully. Space 24 inches. It is no hardship to deadhead them (be sure to cut down to the basal leaves) and of course, they make great cut flowers. An added bonus: deadheading truly prolongs the bloom time.
All leucanthemums should be divided every two years. This will contribute significantly to the longevity of the plant. Remember: the basal foliage usually remains evergreen. Leave it through winter.
